1. What is the new Short Term Graduate Work Visa in New Zealand?
It is a brand new visa launching in late 2026 for graduates who completed a NZQCF Level 5–7 qualification in New Zealand but are not eligible for the Post Study Work Visa. It provides up to 6 months of open work rights to help graduates find employment and transition to longer-term work visas.
2. Who is eligible for the Post Study Work Visa after the 2026 update?
Two groups are eligible. First, graduates with a degree at NZQCF Level 7 or higher — this remains unchanged. Second, from late 2026, graduates who completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 and also hold a bachelor’s degree from anywhere in the world.
3. How long can I stay in New Zealand on a Post Study Work Visa?
Up to 3 years for degree holders at Level 7 or higher, depending on their qualification. For Graduate Diploma holders under the new extended eligibility, the maximum duration is 1 year.
4. Can I apply for a second Post Study Work Visa if I study again?
No. Only one Post Study Work Visa is granted per person, ever. Even if you complete further study at the same or a higher level, a second PSWV will not be issued.
5. Can PSWV holders work for any employer in New Zealand?
Graduates with a degree at NZQCF Level 7 or higher can work for any employer in any job. Graduates with lower-level qualifications must work in a role related to their field of study, as stated in their visa conditions.
6. Can I bring my family to New Zealand on a Post Study Work Visa?
Yes. PSWV holders can support their partner for a work visa and dependent children for student or visitor visas, as long as all requirements are met. This does not apply to Short Term Graduate Work Visa holders.
7. What documents are needed to apply for the Post Study Work Visa?
You will need your passport, proof of your New Zealand qualification, bank statements showing at least NZD $5,000, and police certificates if your total stay in New Zealand is 24 months or more. A medical certificate or chest X-ray may also be required depending on your intended length of stay.
8. When will the Short Term Graduate Work Visa be available to apply for?
Both the Short Term Graduate Work Visa and the extended PSWV eligibility are expected to be available from late 2026. Exact dates have not yet been confirmed by Immigration New Zealand. Students should check immigration.govt.nz for updates.
