Denmark Announces Major Visa Policy Changes for International Students
Denmark has updated its student visa policy. Find out what’s changing for non-state-approved programs and how you can prepare with My Study Offers.
On April 30, 2025, Denmark’s Ministry of Immigration and Integration introduced significant regulatory changes that impact international (third-country) students planning to study in Denmark. Effective from May 2, 2025, students enrolling in non-state-approved higher education programs will face major restrictions, including the loss of work rights during studies, ineligibility for post-study job-seeking permits, and the inability to bring accompanying family members.
What’s Changing?
Here are the key updates affecting new applicants:
- No Study-Work Permit: Students in non-approved programs will no longer be eligible for limited work permits during their studies.
- No Post-Study Job Search Visa: The 6-month job-seeking extension after graduation has been removed for these students.
- No Dependent Visa for Family: Accompanying family members will not be allowed under the new rules.
The objective of these changes is to ensure that residence permits are granted only to genuine students pursuing quality education in Denmark.
Who Is Exempted from These New Rules?
Students who applied before May 2, 2025, or already hold valid residence permits for non-state-approved programs are not affected. They will continue to:
- Work part-time during their studies
- Stay in Denmark for 6 months post-graduation to seek jobs
- Be accompanied by eligible family members
This exception also applies when they extend their current residence permits.
What Should Future Students Do Now?
If you’re considering Denmark for higher education, you need to:
- Prioritize state-approved institutions only
- Understand your post-study and work rights
- Be aware of immigration law updates before applying
Failure to do so could lead to visa rejections or limited post-study opportunities.
